Dr David Galloway (Vice President, Centre for Intelligent Design)

Dr David Galloway is listed as Vice President of C4ID. Hitherto, he has not been well known in creationist or Intelligent Design circles. Nevertheless, he's quite a high profile surgeon in his home territory where he is Vice President of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow. Whilst there is no doubt that Galloway is a capable and talented surgeon, his profession has precious little to to with or say about either geology or evolutionary biology.

Galloway is a member of the Lennox Evangelical Church in Dumbarton, West of Glasgow. See http://www.davidgalloway.co.uk/Church.htm and www.lennoxevangelicalchurch.org

This church is about as fundamentalist as they get and openly promotes young earth creationism to children. It links to this web site - http://www.creationscience.com/onlinebook/index.html – which looks to be dedicated to promoting the work of young earth creationist Walt Brown. The site is also promoting C4ID. The church describes itself as independent but seems to be Brethren. It has no pastor and its web site talks about breaking bread (the Brethren term for Holy Communion). The Gospel Hall web site lists it as a Brethren Church (see http://lists.gospelhall.org.uk/lists/scotland.html).

David Galloway has his own personal web site which details his position on Intelligent Design – see http://www.davidgalloway.co.uk/Index2.html and http://www.davidgalloway.co.uk/Molecules%20to%20morality%20Section%201.htm and http://www.davidgalloway.co.uk/Christian.htm (which seems to confirm that Dr Galloway is probably a hardline young earth creationist as it links to the Answers in Genesis web site; it also links to an old earth creationist web site, though.). Galloway spells out in no uncertain terms on his web site that “An evolutionary approach based on Darwinism or neo-Darwinism cannot possibly be correct.”

There are no ifs and buts or debate there - absolute, certain dogmatism instead.

The web page on morality is well worth a look. Apart from being exceedingly judgemental, it looks to be standard American fundamentalist boilerplate of the religious right standpoint. Basically acceptance of evolutionary biology is, somehow, deeply immoral (see http://www.davidgalloway.co.uk/Molecules%20to%20morality%20Section%201.htm – warning, though, it's exceedingly turgid). The pages is apparently part of an online book Galloway is writing. It studiously avoids mentioning how old Galloway thinks the earth is.

Galloway's web site seems to confirm that he is a deeply conservative fundamentalist as it links to the web site of the US organisation Focus on the Family. Set up by James Dobson, the deeply political and evangelical Focus on the Family has got it in for just about everyone – women, gays, liberals, Democrats, “evilutionists”, “fornicators”, Palestinians... It's seen as a flag bearer for the American hard right. Ironically it thinks “socialised medicine” is immoral. Galloway works in National Health Service hospitals.

Focus on the Family also advocates Intelligent Design and has links to the Discovery Institute. Focus on the Family has long been trying to get ID/creationism taught in schools. It has a branch operation in Ireland.
